National History Day competitors moving on to state!
Twenty-six Ames students competed at the Historic Highways Regional History Day competition today. The competition judges students based on original research they have conducted around the 2018 theme: Conflict and Compromise.
The students are ranked on their ability to find and creatively present primary source information; they may present their research as a film documentary, website, exhibit, research paper, or performance. Students who are ranked top 2 in each category progress to the state competition in Des Moines on Monday, April 30.
The following Ames Middle School students finished in the top 2 and will be moving on to the state competition:
- Gray Degeest for his rap battle performance of Edison vs Tesla in “Opposites Attack”
- Sarah Rundall for her original music and short play performance entitled, “Anna Strong: Legacy of a Female Patriot Spy.” Sarah competed in the senior division for high school students.
- Mia O’Connor-Walker for her film documentary of the struggle for Australian Aboriginale land rights entitled, “The Wave Hill Walk Off”
- Leslie Kim and Joshi Venkatesh for their website, “Fear is Greater than Justice: the Japanese Internment Camps”
- Sophia Cordoba and Emily Poag for their website, “Columbia’s National Front: the Precursor to the War on Drugs”
*Preksha Sarda and Mario Napolitano were recognized as honorable mention for their Exhibit, “The Partitions of India”, but will not advance to the state competition
All students should be proud of the independence, time management, research, writing, and public speaking skills they gained in completing this project.
